BLACK HEALTH: KRYSTLE IRBY’S STORY

In January 2020, a virus that would affect various body systems brought upon a pandemic that took many lives globally. Thankfully, in December 2020, the FDA approved two mRNA vaccines for COVID-19. Though it saved countless lives, some people like, Krystle Irby, faced severe life changes upon receiving their vaccines.

Researchers used several vaccines from other viruses like SARS-CoV to create a vaccine for COVID-19 allowing the FDA to authorize two vaccines. From 2020 – 2023 billions of vaccines were given around the world.

Due to the high-demand for the COVID-19 vaccine the FDA, which normally takes months to years to get approval from, gave emergency authorization for COVID-19 vaccines based on little data they normally wouldn’t accept.

According to a study done by the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, a 24-year-old man with no prior history experienced severe chest pains shortly after receiving the second Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.

Reported incidents of similar cases began, suggesting that the vaccine could cause autoimmune adverse events associated with COVID-19.

A woman by the name of Krystle Irby, a recipient of the vaccine, found herself dealing with a rare disease called Myositis that inflames the muscles causing prolonged muscle fatigue and weakness.

Currently residing in Waldorf, Maryland. Krystle shares in an interview that her symptoms began in 2021, just a few months after being vaccinated. She was later diagnosed with one of five different types of Myositis in February 2022.

Wanting answers behind the cause of her diagnosis, medical professionals were of no help as she shares her story in hopes that someone would listen. Although with no luck, Krystle still believes the cause of her diagnosis is because of her vaccination.

In the interview, Krystle says “I got vaccinated in April of 2021 and May of 2021… that’s the only thing I did different when it comes to my body.”

With the help of her two daughters and close friends, Krystle manages her daily tasks in her day-to-day life. Since being diagnosed, Krystle shares that her conditions continue to improve but with certain tasks’ assistance is needed.

Hoping to inspire others through her journey, Krystle uploads tough challenges and her everyday obstacles in handling her diagnosis online.

Through her uploading videos via TikTok, her platform allows her to use her voice to raise awareness while also showing people that diseases like this exist but with the right support it’s manageable.

Her story inspires others to keep pushing on, allowing viewers to feel a sense of inclusivity. Like they’re not alone in their fight. This built a community of encouragement and determination allowing thousands of fans to pour love and support onto Krystle as she powers through her journey of awareness.

In the future, she plans to write a book detailing events leading up to her diagnosis and how she’s overcome effects of something she had no time to prepare for.
