BLACK HEALTH: THE EFFECTS OF BIPOLAR DISORDER

A man, diagnosed with rapid cycling bipolar disorder, experienced a multitude of experiences where it left him at odds with friends and family. Bipolar disorder is a mental illness that can shift a person’s mood, energy, activity and concentration. Though there are other types of bipolar disorder, rapid cycling is a pattern of episodes in people with the disorder.

The conditions of mental health do not only target those of the black community. Many cultures experience the highs and lows of what a mental illness brings. That said, in the black community the topic of mental health often seen as a weakness.

A study done by the National Mental Health Association found that 63% of African Americans believed depression is a personal weakness.

It’s a challenge within the Black community to discuss topics involving mental health due to several reasons as stated above. NAMI California reports from a survey that 67% of people who agreed with being open to talk about someone’s health were white. This was compared to the 12.5% of African Americans who also agreed.

Using faith and leaning on religion doesn’t always fix things. Symptoms of bipolar disorder can impose serious challenges like psychosis or hallucinations. These symptoms can cause a person to isolate themselves, interfering with relationships, work, school and an everyday routine.

How can one rely on their faith when a disorder such as bipolar requires lifelong treatment? Understanding the biological, genetic and environmental factors that can contribute to bipolar disorder proves that it’s not possible.

To eliminate this stigma, more research needs to be done to examine the different factors that influence bipolar disorder. Something that acts as if it’s a ticking time bomb in your head, should never be seen as a weakness.
