GEORGIA FACES SIGNIFICANT HOUSING SHORTAGE

Georgia, like many other states, face significant housing shortages. The rising costs have impacted many residents. For renters, 30% of their income goes toward rent. Households sacrifice other necessities due to the severe cost burden which often leads to low-income families losing their homes.

David Harper is an owner of a construction business in Elberton, Georgia. Aiming to help low-income families build a home of their own, he employees his son along with others in the construction of small homes in Elberton, Georgia.

From laying down grout to plumbing, Mr. Harper is dedicated in making sure delivery of a safe and stable home is key.

The lack of availability and affordable rental homes make it hard for low-income households which contributes to homelessness in single adults and families.

Atlanta, one the largest and fastest-growing cities, gained over 800,000 new residents in just a decade. According to this article, the increase brings the total population to more than 6 million residents.

Atlanta ranked 9th in severe housing deficit while Georgia ranked 10th. The underproduction of homes climbs over with 100,000 units being short. Though reports show improvement in some areas of Georgia, the lack of housing still affects Georgia as a whole.

There are several key factors that contribute to the economic growth and population increase such as gentrification driving families/people of color out of their communities. Subsidized housing no longer being a solution for many lower-income renters and the rise in prices for homes.

Solutions to combat this housing crises requires several actions like developing more affordable homes on public land but that can take time. What we can appreciate is that there are workers like Mr. Harper who are pushing to close the gap whether they realize it or not.

In hopes of owning your own home, the Georgia Department of Community Affairs introduced a program that offers vouchers to assist low-income individuals and families in renting safe and affordable dwelling units.
