LACK OF PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION IN THE RURAL AREAS OF GEORGIA

Metropolitan areas like Metro Atlanta., which holds the 6th largest metropolitan area in the U.S., make it possible for its residents to get to and from using public transportation. While public transportation is both reliable and convenient. Some residents also utilize other options such as ride-share or taxis. However, where does that leave the rural areas in Georgia?

Rural areas in Georgia often lack widespread public transportation for reasons outside of a resident’s control. In some areas the low population could be a key factor into why no such transportation exists. Compared to urban areas, the higher costs of service delivery may not benefit the demand.

With the rise of Uber Technology, ride-share companies like Lyft or Empower join the conversation regarding safe and reliable transportation. However, unlike popular areas such as Atlanta, the lack of drivers makes it impossible for residents living in rural areas to benefit.

Commonly noticed, in relation to transportation, is the lack of sidewalks. With no public transportation. A person needing to get to a location would require walking but without sidewalks most must rely on the roads for stability. This makes it unsafe as cars pass by potentially causing a risk for someone walking.

The issue is often attributed with the budget constraints. Sidewalks are costly to install, and small-town counties typically do not have the funds to handle these sorts of infrastructures.

Though these issues are commonly expressed and often ignored, communities have considered alternatives like creating pedestrian paths, bicycle lanes and carpooling programs.

With a low population rate combined with high costs for maintenance, Georgia law also holds private property owners responsible for maintaining sidewalks. It would seem the fix for the lack of public transportation becomes that much more difficult. However, the aim to help residents in rural area doesn’t seem to be on anyone’s back burner.
