Elberton, Georgia is a small town in Elbert County. Though small, the residents of Elberton own restaurants, granite sites, small boutiques stores and even thrift stores. It’s easy to miss out on the things that Elberton can offer if you’re just passing through town. However, as a resident, the residents have come up with a fun way to help learn more about their town by way of a scavenger hunt.
Scavenger Hunt, owned by Let’s Roam, is a company that encourages people to learn and connect with people and things around them.
Through challenges given to each party of the hunt, individuals must explore the town and answer questions only found on plaques, statues, art, & buildings around the town. The challenge is very interactive as it challenges each resident or guest to solve the puzzle to gain points.
Designed to attract a large group, the hunt also is made for smaller groups of 1-10. Running 7 Days of the week, the weekends buzzes with residents as parents are off from jobs and children are not in school.
Currently being held in Elberton, the scavenger runs in several states including South Carolina, North Caroline and more.
During the event, we had a chance to speak with a family participating in the event. The Powell family are native residents in Elberton with roots tying back the early 1900s.
In the interview, Rosetta Powell says “This is our first year participating but so far we’ve been two 3 of the 6 spots but we’re thinking that because we’ve lived here for so long that, the questions are a bit easier for us”.
The Powell family shares that they knew exactly where to look so the hunt meant more bonding time before they were off to the next stop.
As each person was texted their own challenge, she says “we thought It would be a bit harder for the younger ones because we didn’t want to give it away too fast but they caught on not long after we did.”
The hunt runs 1.68 miles and includes 6 stops where residents arrive to find answers and connect with their loved ones. From 7 AM to 11 PM residents are seen traveling through town capturing moments using their cell phones and hand held cameras.
One stop of the scavenger hunt is Elbert County’s historic courthouse in Courthouse Square in downtown Elberton. Built in 1893, it serves the seat for Elbert County, Georgia. Many participants found this to be a quick and easy point to gain, as opposed to the Granite Bowl spot, residing between College Avenue and West Church Street.
The last stop found residents at the Christmas Tree House which is historically rumored where the first Christmas tree was erected. Located on Heard Street in Elberton, Georgia residents were tasked with finding a message on a specific piece of art alongside other tasks.
